Registered late 2020.
Why did you become a celebrant?
I became a celebrant as my son asked me to do the honours for his wedding in February 2021. I undertook training at The Celebrant School before registering to be sure I had the knowledge and confidence to undertake this privileged work.
What involvement do you have or had with CANZ at a branch or national level?
National Executive – started mid-year in 2023 and officially in August 2023. Connect Local Central Auckland from 2023. Connect Local Auckland Hub Coordinator 2024. Co-Chair of Auckland Branch with Elaine/Spike Spearman 2024.
What ceremonies do you perform?
Personalised, registry and wedding vow renewals – so far!
What do you enjoy about being a celebrant?
The people I meet and the connections that we establish. The memories that we create together. The opportunity to use my creativity combined with other skills I’ve gained throughout my lifetime.
What are some of the hardest parts of being a celebrant?
Demanding parents – not of me, but of the bride and groom.
What was the most memorable ceremony you have performed?
It would have to be Marc and Mari – my son and his wife, my first ceremony.
What would be your typical day as a celebrant?
Drink water – looking after my throat as Jo Smith, Hawke’s Bay Celebrant, has shared with us. Reply to enquiries and follow up on marriage licences. Talk to my mate Spike about National Executive, Auckland Branch, celebrant things – and life in general! Get the library or garden ready for ceremonies. (most of my ceremonies are at home). Review today’s ceremony/ies and make sure I’m in the “celebrant head space” Look at social media for celebrants, and create my own posts. Sometimes creative time – working on ceremonies, researching online, writing.
What advice do you have for someone new to the industry?
Get training from The Celebrant School. Join CANZ and attend events so you can network and learn from others.
How do you like to relax?
Spend time with my husband, adult kids, grandchildren, and friends. Walk, walk, walk. Paddleboard. Wine and dine!
