Navigating perinatal loss: A bereavement midwife’s perspective
No matter how small a baby, the impact of loss can be forever. The ripples of loss extend through the bereaved parents, their families, friends, work colleagues and through the maternity settings in which the loss occurred.
The way in which patients and their families are treated when their baby dies has far reaching effects on the ongoing mental health of bereaved parents. Inadequate care might exacerbate an already difficult grief hindering the parents’ process of healing. The long-term effects can be both negative and positive.
The literature points to the importance of providing best practice in bereavement care. This requires up-to-date bereavement care training for staff, and best practice policies and procedures, to ensure that families and staff are optimally supported.
This webinar aims to support professionals who work with mothers, fathers and families navigating this often unexpected and overwhelming experience. It also explores how we can best support those caring for loss families by creating spaces for sensitive conversations filled with empathy and consideration.

Changing home, changing roles: Grief, loss and transition to aged care with Dr Brenda Bentley
Changing Home, Changing Roles explores the transition to residential aged care through the lens of grief, loss, and transition. Moving into care involves far more than a change of residence: it can bring changes to home, possessions, routines, autonomy, identity, relationships, and family roles, often against a backdrop of increasing frailty and cumulative loss.
This webinar considers aged care transition as a multidimensional experience of grief and loss, drawing on concepts including anticipatory grief, disenfranchised grief, and ambiguous loss. Bridges’ Transition Model and the Dual Process Model provide additional frameworks for understanding how people and families navigate change, loss, and adaptation.
The webinar will also explore the importance of preserving dignity, agency and continuity of self, and considers research-informed strategies for supporting people and their families before, during and after the transition to aged care.
