What does a marriage celebrant do?
A marriage celebrant designs and leads your ceremony. If you have chosen a personalised ceremony, a celebrant works with you before the day to understand your story as a couple and create a ceremony that feels personal rather than generic. They also guide you through the legal requirements, ensuring everything is official and taken care of.
Most celebrants will meet with you at least once before the day, write your ceremony, help with your vows, and guide you through every part of the ceremony itself.
How is a Civil Union different?
A civil union is a legally recognised relationship available to any two people in New Zealand, regardless of gender. Civil unions carry many of the same legal rights and responsibilities as marriage, but some couples choose a civil union because it better reflects their personal beliefs, values, or views on marriage.
The ceremony process is very similar to a wedding ceremony and can be as formal, relaxed, traditional, or personal as you’d like.
A civil union celebrant will work with you before the day to create a ceremony that reflects your relationship and the commitment you’re making to one another. They’ll also guide you through the legal requirements and support you throughout the ceremony.
What will it cost?
Each celebrant sets their own rates based on their experience, location and the type of ceremony. The best thing to do is reach out to a few celebrants directly to discuss what’s included and what suits your budget.
There are generally two types of ceremonies and the style you choose will affect the cost:
Personalised ceremony which is fully bespoke, held anywhere you choose, on any day, at any time. Fees vary depending on your celebrant.
Registry ceremony which follows a set script with no personalisation. It must take place on a weekday between 9am and 5pm, with a maximum of 10 guests, no decorations or professional photographers, and not at a commercial venue. The cost is $175 for the celebrant.
For both types of ceremony, you will pay $158 to Births, Deaths and Marriages for your marriage licence and $35 for your marriage certificate.
