The Manawatū Branch of Celebrants Aotearoa was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Graeme Proctor on 8 June 2026.
I first met Graeme in 2018 when I became a celebrant and attended my very first CANZ meeting. I arrived early, feeling a little nervous and unsure of what to expect. Graeme was there, welcoming people as he always did, and he became the first celebrant I ever met.
That first impression has remained with me ever since.
Graeme was a gentleman in every sense of the word. He was a man of considerable presence, yet beneath that was a kind, caring, and compassionate nature. To many of us, he was a gentle giant, someone who put people at ease, listened without judgement, and offered support without ever seeking recognition for it.
Through his work at The Lychway and within the wider funeral and celebrant communities, Graeme touched countless lives. He understood the importance of ceremony and the privilege of walking alongside families during some of their most difficult moments. His professionalism was matched by genuine warmth, empathy, and respect for others.
What has struck me most since hearing of his passing is the consistency of the stories people share. Whether speaking with celebrants, funeral directors, colleagues, or families, everyone seems to remember the same qualities: kindness, integrity, patience, and generosity. It is rare to meet someone of whom so many people speak so highly.
Graeme’s legacy extends far beyond the years he spent serving his community. It lives on in the people he encouraged, the families he supported, the colleagues he mentored, and the friendships he nurtured throughout his life.
On behalf of the Manawatū-Whanganui Branch of CANZ, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Rita, his family, friends, colleagues, and all who knew and loved him.
We are grateful for the example Graeme set, the wisdom he shared, and the kindness he showed. He will be remembered with great affection and respect.
